The award ceremony took place on 5 March 2012 in the Red City Hall of Berlin. The Governing Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, welcomed the 120 guests:
“The active participation of people with disabilities in social life is the focus of the “Living in the Encounter” projects. Thomas Kraus, who worked for it for many years on a completely voluntary basis and often at his own expense, receives the highest endowed award. He succeeds in infecting people worldwide with his idea of organising congresses for persons with disabilities. This project stands exemplary for the outstanding and exemplary civil society projects distinguished today in Berlin”.
