Celebrating beautiful minds
The 4th Indian Congress took place in Coimbatore / South India from 8 to 11 February 2023. The Karl Kubel Institute provided rooms and food for all participants with disabilities free of charge! Almost 100 people participated in the whole event and came from different cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore.
The theme “Independent Living” was chosen after the 3rd Congress. There were plenary sessions on assistive technologies and animal assisted therapies for persons with disabilities. It was interesting to learn that in India many rescued street animals are used for this purpose. Different models of supported living were presented. For example, a project of families who move in together and support each other. In case the parents are no longer able to take care of their disabled children, the siblings take over this family-based care system.
Three of the participants presented their own books. One author taught the audience, “We disabled people don’t judge others – everyone is individual!” A visually impaired group presented tennis and boccia.
A public art festival was organised in the city’s largest shopping mall. For hours, music and dance were presented on stage and a variety of painting opportunities were offered. Some prominent personalities helped to raise awareness for the needs and talents of persons with disabilities. Major medias like Times of India and The Hindu reported! The congress provided a great opportunity to meet again, interact and learn. The 5th one is already planned!
